It also assists with the better uptake of minerals and vitamins, giving the body what it needs to strengthen its immune system to fight off infections.

The high level of antioxidant proanthocyanidins in cranberries helps prevent certain bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract walls, and in this way helps prevent infections. The currently proposed mechanism of action focuses primarily on cranberry’s ability to prevent bacterial binding to host cell surface membranes. In vitro studies have observed potent inhibition of bacterial adherence of Escherichia coli and other gram-negative uro-pathogens. Cranberry has been found to specifically inhibit hemagglutination of E. coli by expression of types 1 and P adhesion through the component compounds fructose and proanthocyanidins.

Buchu, with its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory actions, is used to fight urinary tract infections, including infections involving the urethra (urethritis) and kidneys (pyelonephritis).
