Summer is a magical time of the year. For most of us, this time of the year brings more positive attributes into our lives and allows us to enjoy each day outside in the sun. But how do we keep healthy during the hot months of summer?
Now that we’re putting the winter months behind us and getting ourselves ready for the majestic summer months, we see a lot of changes to our health. In general, summer brings much-needed mental & physical health benefits. However, changes in weather doesn’t mean all of our flu season turmoil is behind us. Changes in the weather can bring changes within our bodies too. So how do we keep ourselves on top of our health during the hot months of summer?
EXERCISE – Get the endorphins flowing!
While we should exercise all year round, exercising during the summer is usually more fun as we may enjoy the opportunity to get outside! Essentially, any sort of physical activity can be seen as exercise so going for walks, hikes, runs, or even just dancing can all be very beneficial for your immune system. When we boost our immune system, we fight off pathogens. NCBI [1] simply defines a pathogen as being “an organism causing the disease to its host”. So, any virus or bad bacteria can cause this negative effect on our systems, but any exercise can help fight against it.

NOTE: Just be wary about dehydration and make sure to listen to your body. If you find yourself feeling light-headed or nauseous, stop immediately, drink some water and head inside.
SUNSHINE – Stock up on Vitamin D
There is nothing more delightful than being able to go outside and enjoy those incredible warm days. The sun on our skin feels amazing, but the benefits of that sun inside of our bodies are vital for our health.
Vitamin D is a crucial vitamin that we gain from the sun. While it is best known for aiding in bone health due to supporting our absorption of calcium, Harvard Health [2] states that vitamin D can be “active in many tissues and cells besides bone and controls an enormous number of genes, including some associated with cancers, autoimmune disease and infection”. Even though vitamin D isn’t spoken about often, it is a vital vitamin that we must make sure we get enough of and thankfully for summer in Africa, it is pretty easy!
CHD-FA – Detox and boost immune!
When we discuss our general health, we can’t ignore gut health and how beneficial it is for us to keep it healthy. Our gut is made up of organs that include the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, pancreas, liver, gallbladder, small intestine, colon and rectum. While this seems like a lot, we can help keep our system healthy through the consumption of CHD-FA. If we can accomplish this, our immune system will be strengthened tenfold, keeping our bodies immensely healthy.
Why is this significant? With CHD-FA being able to activate the body’s macrophages and killer T–cells which rid our bodies of viruses or bacteria, as well as produce lymphocytes which produce antibodies that can support the body’s immune response, we will be supporting the body’s most powerful defence mechanism.

A daily dose of CHD-FA can also help us:
- Deliver vitamins to our system due to being the most efficient transporter which, in turn, allows for vitamins and minerals to be better absorbed into the body.
- Balance our pH levels, meaning to return our body back to a neutral state if it is too acidic. This is critical as disease, virus and bacteria thrive in acidic environments making your body more prone to illness.
- Detoxify our system from all of the toxins we absorb throughout the day which can include air pollution, chemicals in food and drinking water, preservatives, additives, pesticides and more. By attaching to these foreign substances in our bodies, it can either shift them into a form we can use or flush them out of our system.

SUMMER FRUITS & VEGETABLES – Eat fresh and feel fresh
Not merely does our daily life get better with more sun, but the same sun brings us a much wider variety of fruits and vegetables. Being able to consume more vitamins and minerals, on top of being able to consume fresher meals, ultimately brings us some much-needed hydration. Along with this, we can also see “lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent some types of cancer, lower risk of eye and digestive problems, and have a positive effect upon blood sugar, which can help keep appetite in check” according to Harvard Health [3].
SLEEP – Rest, Restore and Rejuvenate
Sleep is such a substantial part of our health that throughout our hectic lifestyle, we forget just how important it really is. NHS [4] states that “lack of sleep can affect your overall health and make you prone to serious medical conditions, such as obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes”. For some, sleeping throughout the summer can be difficult due to heat. If this someone is you, you can opt for blackout curtains to leave your room cooler, take a cool shower before bed, look for lighter blankets and even sleep naked. With this, we can boost our immune system and mental wellbeing, prevent diabetes, can fight heart disease and can even boost our sex drive.
